Ok so I've watched my fair share of Korean dramas and of the ones that I have completed I decided that I have to choose my Top Ten! Which was actually super hard so I have a runner up place!
Runner up: Rooftop Prince
Other Names: Attic King, Attic Prince
Leads: Park Yoo-Chun, Han Jimin
Year: 2012
Genre: Comedy, Romance, Fantasy, Time Travel
Episodes: 20
This drama involves the idea of time traveling and reincarnation in a very lovely cute rom-com way. The trouble that the King and his subjects get into in present day Seoul and the intrigue of solving the mystery and links between the character make this drama a great watch! It's the perfect blend between plot and character development! Definitely something I suggest watching!
10. Emergency Couple
Other names: Emergency Man and Woman, ER Couple, May's Garden
Leads: Song Ji-hyo, Choi Jin Hyuk, Lee Pil-Mo, Choi Yeo-jin
Year: 2014
Genre: romance, comedy, medical
Episodes: 21
Song Ji Hyo has always been my bias from running man and when I heard she was in a rom-com and that Gary made a hilarious cameo I immediately started watching. This drama is set mostly in the emergency room and mixes the excitement of a medical drama with a good life lesson. Sometimes things happen and you can't communicate with your partner and you break up. Watching these two who start off hating each other and end up finally understanding each other and rekindling there love was an extreme pleasure. Also the adult jokes were hilarious. Definitely a recommended.
9. The Moon Embracing the Sun
Leads: Han Gain, Kim Soo-Hyun, Jung Il-Woo, Kim Min-Seo
Year: 2012
Genre: romance, drama, historical, fantasy
Episodes: 20
Kim Soo-Hyun has been one of my favourite lead actors ever since Dream High. This combined with my love of historical dramas was great. This drama is a pure romance type drama. The child actors were all fantastic. Applause to them. They were so good, I was disappointed when it went to the adult actors. Check it out!
8. Mischievous Kiss
Other names: Playful Kiss, Naughty Kiss
Leads: Kim Hyun-Joong, Jung So-Min
Year: 2010
Genre: Comedy, Romance, School
Episodes: 16 + 7 Youtube episodes
I'm not gonna lie, the fact that this drama is old and Kim Hyun-Joong turned out to be an asshole did make it go down on my list. Still, this drama is a Korean drama classic. You know a story is good when it's been done in multiple countries. Kind of like boys over flowers. This is a drama you must watch when starting your kdrama lineup.
7. I Miss You
Other Names: Missing You
Leads: Park Yoo-chun, Yoon Eun-hye, Yoo Seung-ho
Year: 2012/13
Genre: suspense, drama, romance
Episodes: 21
With my love of both Yoon Eun-hye and Park Yoo-chun, I was mighty excited when this drama was announced. BTW does Yoo-chun look like a hong kong actor? He reminds me of this guy but I don't know his name. Anyone who watches TVB dramas do kindly tell. The dramatic and suspenseful story of I Miss You combined with the amazing acting of child actors Yeo Jin-Goo and Kim So-hyun makes you feel for the two characters immensely. It was a pleasure to watch their psychology as children and adults. This is definitely a drama I recommend.
6. You're Beautiful
Other Names: You're Handsome, He's Beautiful
Leads: Park Shin-Hye, Jang Geun-Suk, Jeong Yonghwa, Lee Hongki
Year: 2009
Genre: comedy, drama, romance, friendship, music
Episodes: 16
Although this drama starts off slow, this story is another classic. This drama was one of my first dramas, one of a spree of cross-dressing dramas, and so it holds a special place in my heart. I would go on to follow all of the cast in their future dramas and gigs. The OST of this drama was also some of my favourite. This is another classic that must be watched if you are starting Kdrama.
5. Dream High
Leads: Kim Soo-Hyun, Bae Suzy, Taecyeon, Ham Eun-Jung, Wooyoung, IU
Year: 2011
Genre: romance, comedy, friendship, school, music
Episodes: 16
This slice of kpop/music high school life drama is one of my favourite dramas because of its feel-good youth vibe. Also it touches upon some great themes, and the relationship of everybody is fantastic. I go on to follow the whole cast on their endeavours as well. This is the drama that made Bae Suzy and Kim Soo-Hyun popular and known. Not to mention having IU and 2pm. Kim Pil Suk (IU) has to be my favourite character and her relationship with Jason (Wooyoung) was so adorable that I wished they were dating in real life. Props to Kim Soo-Hyun, who was the only non-singer, for playing the part of a musical genius so well. I definitely recommend watching this drama.
4. Coffee Prince
Other Names: The First Shop of Coffee Prince
Leads: Gong Yoo, Yoo Eun-Hye, Lee Sun-Kyun, Chae Jung-An
Year: 2007
Genre: drama, romance, comedy, family, friendship
Episodes: 17
The first drama I ever watched, this classic also made me continue to follow Yoon Eun-Hye in all of her future endeavours. Yoon Eun-Hye is the perfect balance of managing to actually look kind of like a boy as a guy (instead of looking way too female and obvious) and then transforming into a really hot girl. It's amazing how she looks so short as a guy and then as a girl she is actually really tall. This drama will always be on my list because it was the first kdrama that I ever watched. This is another classic that must be watched if you start dramas.
3. Who Are You: School 2015
Leads: Kim Sohyun, Nam Joo-hyuk, Yook Sungjae
Year: 2015
Genre: Drama, Mystery, School, Youth, Romance
Episodes: 16
I had been hearing about the School series for a really long time but I hadn't started watching it. Being a fan of both Yook Sungjae and Kim Sohyun was a good enough reason to catapult me into starting this gem of a drama. although I can't effectively compare to its predecessors, if they were better then this I can't wait. Honestly, although I like Sungjae as a singer, I kind of went into this expecting him to play a typical second lead with nothing special and I didn't think he would be a good actor. Boy was I wrong. Sungjae gave me such a huge second-lead syndrome and was successful at making me forget that he was Sungjae. I wholeheartedly loved and saw him as Gong Taekwang. And although I like him I shipped him with Eun Bi so badly. This drama is a must watch for its mystery and slice of school life episodes. You will come to love every character and be very invested.
2. Faith
Other Names: The Great Doctor
Leads: Lee Minho, Kim Hee-Seon
Year: 2012
Genre: Drama, History, Romance, Sci Fi, Time Travel
Episodes: 24
Lee Minho is another famous male actor that is often the male lead. His roles are diverse and I have watched plenty dramas where he stars in it. This is a drama about time travelling and romance. The historical setting also adds to it. I love this drama for so many reasons and absolutely suggest it for watching.
1. Bimil
Other Names: Secret, Secret Love
Leads: Ji Sung, Hwang Jung-eum, Bae Soobin, Lee Dahee
Year: 2013
Genre: drama, romance
Episodes: 16
Bimil is one of the most dramatic dramas I have ever watched. It all started with a music video of an OST written by Ailee. I started watching this drama and boy did I cry. I'm a sap for tragedies so this was right up my alley. The acting of both Ji Sung and Jun-Eum was fantastic. So much so that they reconvene in drama Kill Me, Heal Me where there roles slightly switch. I definitely recommend watching this drama, but make sure you have the tissues ready.
Alright that's it for the Top Ten Drama list. I will probably update this as new dramas start kicking old dramas out. :)
